German premium automakers faced with a sharp decline in China
German automakers, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen, are experiencing a sharp decline in their sales in China, where the market share of foreign brands has fallen below 30%. Mercedes-Benz recorded a 31% drop in its sales in China in the last quarter, while imported BMW and Porsche models fell by 49% in September, and Porsche is closing several dealerships. Faced with this situation, Mercedes-Benz is preparing new cost-cutting measures in Germany, plans to produce locally almost all of its cars destined for China, and strengthen its presence in the United States. The national differences concern the responses provided: Germany is facing the issue of cost savings and the arrival of Chinese premium brands, the United States is identified as a strengthening market for Mercedes-Benz, while in China local competition and moving upmarket explain the loss of ground by foreign brands.
