China: sharp rise in car exports and new international challenges

In early November 2026, Chinese automotive product exports reached nearly 31 billion dollars in September, up more than 40 percent year-on-year, while parts exports rose 24.4 percent and parts imports declined. Chinese automakers are expanding their exports, such as Zotye launching production of the right-hand-drive Wink Y01 for foreign markets, and a state-owned automaker seeking to win the trust of foreign customers for its electric vehicles. Logistics flows are intensifying, with rising exports to Belt and Road countries, 600 million yuan in automotive exports in the Jimo free trade zone, more than 100,000 vehicles exported by ro-ro ships at the Port of Fuzhou, and the first train dedicated to new energy vehicles in Dongguan. Exports reached 8.2 million units while domestic sales fell 4.5 percent, and foreign automakers based in China are adopting a local production model for global exports. This expansion is nevertheless accompanied by cost and regulatory compliance challenges, as well as growing risks despite a 1.3-fold increase in exports.
